Yanaguana, a production by the visual art class at Stephen F. Austin Academy,
curated by artist Georgia Tambasis.
Fourth through seventh grade students observed and did research about the San Antonio River. They explored the sounds, how it feels to be water, what does the River look like now, and what it would be like if the San Antonio River were clean. They wrote words and put them together to make a poem. Then they wrote the play. What is most important is that the students learned to work together through periods of frustration, confusion, and chaos by utilizing their critical thinking skills and problem- solving techniques. They learned not to give up and that the process is as important as the end result, if not more. This play is the sole work of the students. An installation of the documented process, props and a video of the play was featured at the Project Space at the Blue Star Contemporary Art Space from June 29-August 20, 2006.
Funding for this project was provided by 04ARTS Foundation in collaboration with Blue Star Contemporary Art Center.
